People with low back pain have been shown to have altered patterns of transverse abdominus recruitment (Hodges and Richardson 1996 and Hides et al 1996) and decreased size of lumbar multifidus (Hides et al 2001). Studies have shown that the method of recruiting transverse abdominus (with the Modern pilates ™ method) is a repeatable and valid way of retraining the altered patterns of muscle recruitment with people with low back pain.

The Modern Pilates ™ method is taught only to experienced fitness professionals and physiotherapists. Extensive assessment guarantees a high level of professionalism in Modern Pilates instructors with extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology and exercise knowledge.
